James Zhang

Founder, President

James is a senior at Ridge High School and loves exploring linguistics. While learning Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and English , James has a cultivated a passion to learn more about languages in a philosophical and scientific manner.

He is the Parliamentarian of the New Jersey Classical League and the president of his school’s Research Club and Red Cross Club. He also plays on his school’s varsity basketball team. Additionally, he works on the board of officers of the student-led organization FeedToGive that has raised more than $40,000 to combat COVID-19.

James founded Linguage in the hopes to share with others his passion for linguistics and to help bring communities together with a stronger understanding and cooperation of cultural appreciation. James’s other interests include blogging, basketball, computer science, and physics. He wants to pursue linguistics in college and computational linguistics later in graduate school.

Maddy Volosov

Legal Liaison 

Maddy is a 17-year-old student at Ridge High School. She is the grandchild of Russian immigrants, an influence which overwhelmingly guides the way she views the world and interprets other cultures.

Maddy often ventures outside the U.S., traveling to other countries to appreciate their way of life. She loves learning French in school, another language that parts of her family speak. She is always looking to expand her horizons and find new ways to admire others’ lifestyles. By joining the Linguage team, Maddy aims to spread the study of linguistics to other states and countries, allowing others to appreciate the importance of world languages. Although she resides in the United States, her Russian roots guide her and remain a crucial aspect of her everyday life. Maddy hopes to aid others in appreciating their own culture and those of others. 

Furthermore, she is the president of the UNICEF club, which has taught her the importance of being a role model and always seeking to help others in any possible way. By joining UNICEF, she learned how to be a leader and help those in need, which inspired her to become a lawyer. She plans on majoring in pre-legal studies and psychology in college to further her mission of helping others. 

Bharat Sanka

Research Director 

Bharat is a senior at Ridge High School. He is the captain of the congressional debate team on Ridge Forensics. Through Speech and Debate and his role as editor of the Ridge Political Review, he has learned and written about countries all over the world. He has become interested in the many cultures on our globe and how they are tied to their own specific languages. This curiosity about language and their cultural ties to each region has led him to the Linguage Team, to further study and investigate how a nation’s language is influenced by their culture.

He is a new member and wants to start exploring and sharing the complexities of world languages!

Catherine Flournoy

Research Associate & Senior Forum Moderator

Catherine is a 17-year-old student at Ridge High School. As the child of a Vietnamese immigrant and having a rich French background, she is engrossed in discovering the complexities of both her Asian and European heritage.

She enjoys traveling and absorbing the various cultures that surround her. Especially, frequently venturing to Vietnam and France, Catherine desires to better understand the traditions and culture of these beautiful places with the unique lens offered by linguistics. She loves learning French and linguistics; Catherine is also dedicated to community service, logging over 500 hours in high school. From mentoring special-needs children in the Parents of Exceptional Children Program to volunteering with senior citizens at Fellowship Village, she is always making the world a better place.

By joining the Linguage team, she aspires to promote the importance of diversity amongst world languages and cultures to spread positivity. Namely, living in a globalized community for all her life that dismisses specific cultures, she has recognizes a lack of cultural identity. However, through her trips to Vietnam and gradually recognizing the pivotal role of the Vietnamese language in its culture , she has taken great strides in uncovering her roots, which have boosted her self efficacy and confidence. Having endured such experiences, she firmly wants to help others to find and appreciate their own uniqueness.

Additionally, she is the Captain of the Ridge Cheerleading Team, one of the top programs in the nation, and has cheered for 12 years and coached the sport for four years. The sport has continuously taught her the importance of teamwork and leadership skills. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Daphne Arthur

Director of Public Relations

Daphne is a 17-year-old Ridge High School student. She has loved learning about different languages and cultures since she was in middle school. She currently takes both American Sign Language and Latin consecutively and loves every second of both classes. These two unique language experiences have impacted her educational skills immensely and are the reasons why she is interested in joining the Linguage team!

Her other interests include: dancing and working with children. She has danced for over 14 years and is the captain of the Maximum Performance Dance Team and the choreography captain for Ridge Dance Collective. She also loves to combine two passions by coaching younger dance teams and assisting dance classes. Additionally, her brother with Autism opened her up to the world of special needs. She participates in the Social Skills Club and volunteers for the Saturdays in Motion Program at her local YMCA. 

She is so excited to start her journey with Linguage and is eager to delve deeper into the realm of linguistics!

Courtney McCaffrey

Social Media Manager

Courtney is a senior who attends Ridge High School. Her fascination with foreign languages stems from her passion for Latin, which she has taken for seven years. In addition to always having a particular interest in Latin, Courtney also has a passion for helping others learn, which is a big reason why she has volunteered at the Vacation Bible School, a religious education camp, every summer. 

By joining the Linguage team, Courtney hopes to encourage others to connect with languages that they are passionate about while diving into the world of linguistics.

Her other interests include playing card games, spending time with her friends and family, and running. 

Francesca Miele

Broadcast and Video Editor

Francesca is a senior at Ridge High School. Her interests include running and STEM. Particularly, she wishes to combine linguistics and STEM subjects, such as robotics and engineering, to potentially make major contributions to society as these skills are vital to the engineering world.

Having taken Italian for seven years and originating from a deep Italian heritage, Francesca is fascinated by the language, its culture, and, especially, how it connects her with her background. By joining the Linguage team, she wishes to aid other young students to recognize and appreciate their own cultures while having fun learning something new! 

Along with her interest in STEM subjects and passion for the Italian language, Francesca enjoys running for her Ridge Cross Country/Track and Field team, painting, and surfing.
